Official name "Township of South Orange Village." is a suburban municipality in the New York Metropolitan Area located in Essex County New Jersey. As of the 2000 Census, the village's population was 16,964.

The gaslight has long been the symbol of South Orange. The town is one of only a few New Jersey towns to retain street illumination (others include Riverton Palmyra, Glen Ridge and some parts of Orange). Many of the major roads in town do have modern mercury vapor streetlights (built into gaslight frames), but most of the residential sections of the town are still gas lit. There have been claims that South Orange has more operating gaslights than any other community in the United States.The Architecture in the quaint town of South Orange is extremely varied. Most of the town is single-family wood framed houses but homes cover a range that includes every common style of the Mid-Atlantic United States since the late nineteenth century,Tudor, Victorian,Colonial, Ranch, Modern and in sizes that range from brick English Cottages to giant French style Mansard-roofed mansions. There are a few apartment buildings from various eras as well as townhouse-style condominiums of mostly more recent vintage.

 

South Orange has a central business district with restaurants, banks, and other retail and professional services. There are a few small office buildings. The South Orange Village Hall, built in 1894, is registered in the National Register of Historic Places The town has a municipal swimming pool open to all residents.

Seton Hall University’s 58-acre campus is located in South Orange, New Jersey. South Orange was the first municipality in New Jersey to recognize civil unions for homosexual. couples.

Maplewood Homes for Sale


Maplewood is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, with a total area of 3.8 square miles and a population of 23,867 residents. Maplewood prides itself on being a diverse and family-friendly community. Maplewood was originally developed as a weekend town for Newark residents and still maintains something of a country-home aesthetic. In a number of surveys it is ranked among the most desirable places to live in the United States. There’s a friendly downtown area locals call "the village" or "Maplewood Center" quaint with its own movie theater, several upscale and mid-scale restaurants, a small supermarket, independent café, two liquor stores, a toy store and a small bookstore.

The houses are predominantly twenties clapboard or brick Colonials. The basic structure of town has remained largely unchanged since the 1950s although there are a handful of condo developments.

Maplewood draws a mix of ethnically diverse, artistic and intelligent residents, seeking to raise families near but not in expensive Manhattan.Maplewood offers a midtown direct train to Manhattan as well as a quick bus commute. Maplewood residents pride themselves on their friendlyness and open-mindedness. More than 40 percent of Maplewood’s residents are nonwhite. The town is also home to a number of interracial and gay couples.

 

There are several public playgrounds, parks, and baseball fields that are flooded in the winter for ice-skating. A 2,000-acre nature preserve at the edge of town is frequented by hikers and picnickers and the Olympic-size public pool is a center for community fun in the summer.

Maplewood is twenty miles from midtown New York. Served by a New Jersey Transit rail station, the train takes 25 to 35 minutes to Penn Station. Parking at the station is limited, but for $60 a year, residents can sign up for the popular jitney service to and from the station.

Ultimate Frisbee (now called simply "Ultimate") was invented in Maplewood in 1968 by students at Columbia High School. A plaque commemorating the birthplace of Ultimate Frisbee is located in the student parking lot.

Maplewood is the birthplace of the wooden golf tee, invented by William Lowell at the Maplewood Golf Club in 1921.
