Livingston resides in Essex County New Jersey, in the area known as The Gate Way and is considered by most, to be a suburb of Newark. Known as a bedroom community, meaning most people sleep there but earn their living else where. In recent years, Livingston has been growing increasingly diverse. New residents are drawn to the township by its quality school system and community programs. Named in honor of William Livingston, the first Governor of New Jersey, Livingston was incorporated as a township on February 5, 1813. Residents enjoy a suburban lifestyle with close proximity to New York City (21 miles).

Despite its commuter town rep, there are still numerous stores and restaurants throughout Livingston. The center of the town., stretching along Livingston Avenue from Route 10 to Northfield Ave is dominated by small local shops and restaurants with a few well known stores like Starbucks recently opening. Livingston Mall Macy's Lord & Taylor Sears Barnes & Noble and more is located at the south-western corner of the town. At the outer skirt of the western side of town is the starting point of the Route 10 shopping corridor that extends to East Hanover and is home of many major big-box stores.

Many office parks are located along Eisenhower Parkway on the western side of the town including headquarters for CIT Group Inteplast Group The Briad Group and customer service and support center of Verizon New Jersey.

Saint Barnabas Medical Center – a 597-bed hospital – ranked the 13th best hospital in the United States by AARP is located in the southern side of the town near West Orange and Millburn.

There are more than 470 acres of wooded parks with passive hiking trails in Livingston. An additional 1,817 acres are zoned to be preserved in its natural state without public access. There are many smaller parks and open space that are integrated with recreational and municipal sport facilities, including two swimming pools, ten little league baseball diamonds, four full baseball diamonds, eight full soccer lacrosse fields, one full football field, three basket ball courts, sixteen tennis courts, eleven playgrounds a jogging track, a dog park, and a fishing ice skating pond. The township is in the planning stage to build inter-connected mixed-used paths biking and hiking trails to connect those parks and open space throughout the town. Livingston has an active open space trust fund that continues to acquire more lands for preservation and recreation. In April 2010, Livingston, NJ, was recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA for its commitment to urban forestry.Livingston residents are known for their willingness to volunteer and stubborn community pride. Business Week Online recently named Livingston as one of the nation’s 25 "best affordable suburbs." based on the towns low crime rates, above-average school test scores, quick commute to two major cities, diverse cultural atmosphere and interesting downtown. It didn’t hurt that Livingston’s median housing price is $514,400.
